HEATHER GIVANS WAS HERE!!!
Before we got to her awesomeness, we talked about guild business.
Understandably, we had a whopping 49 people in attendance and quite a few guests from out of town! We gave a prize away to the person who traveled the farthest – from out of STATE!
We also recognized our festival volunteers and gave away some prizes as a small thank you.
Laura reminded members that the THINK TINY challenge would be due at next meeting on July 19, so they would be ready with their ideas. We announced this challenge at our May meeting and you can get the details on that in this post.
Lazara updated the members that our July meeting would be a “techniques meeting”. She will be teaching about Fabric Niblets and Jeanne will show how to do paper piecing her way.
She also reminded members of the Perot Museum Tech Truck’s family friendly event on July 28th. All children must be accompanied by an adult and sign ups are here.
The Tech Truck will also be at our August meeting just for us adults! We will be making quilt blocks that LIGHT UP! How electrifying! To participate in the activity at meeting, the kits will only be $5. They are regularly $10, but the guild is covering half the cost for this experience. Purchasing a kit is not necessary to attend meeting, but who just wants to watch?! To sign up and get all the details click here.

Mary Beth gave the treasurer’s report and let us know how much our guild earned at the NTQF. The festival was a great success thanks to our amazing members, and we can’t wait to spend this money on programs to reward them! This information is also included in the July Newsletter for members.
Raffle tickets are also available for the 2018 Quiltcon Charity Quilt. If you would like to take some to sell, you’ll have to pay for them up front. Or collect money from friends and bring to meeting. Or just bring your friends to meeting! The drawing will be held at our party in December.
Quiltcon registration is also open for members that want to go to Nashville!
With the business adjourned we were treated to the hilarity and talent of Heather Givans! She was seriously SO FUN!
She started out the meeting being quite disappointed that we didn’t have anyone named Lois in attendance. Her dear grandmother is named Lois, and she loves to congratulate those with that name. We heard quite a few anecdotes about Grandma Lois (who sounds as amazing as Heather herself by the way) throughout the trunk show and presentation.
Heather started quilting while going on a retreat with her mother, who had a lifelong dream of quilting. A full time art teacher at the time, she also started a boutique headband business. After moving back to Indianapolis, she opened a store and studio with the original plan to sell fabric she herself didn’t use – and the destination quilt shop Crimson Tate was born. Turns out, Heather ended up being the only quilter in the family and what an AMAZING quilter she is.
While attending Quilt Market, she met a few of the wonderful minds at Windham fabrics and the ball started rolling for her own fabric designs. A graduate of Purdue University in Fine Arts, she took us through her creative process for designing her fabrics. We got a front row seat to not only how she came up with each fabric, but also the hilarious stories of meeting deadlines and frustrating the production guy on how to achieve her visions.
Next we got a look at her quilts and the amazing quilting up close. I think the pictures speak for themselves below! Before it was all over, we recorded a greeting video telling Grandma Lois hello from Texas <3
